UK bans two Zara advertisements over appearing unhealthy models
The watchdog highlighted that in one image, the use of shadows combined with a slicked-back bun made a model look "gaunt." In another, the model’s pose and the low-cut design of a shirt emphasized her "protruding" collarbones.
The ASA deemed the adverts "irresponsible" and ruled that they must not be used again in their current form. Zara was also instructed to ensure all future images are "prepared responsibly."
Zara has since removed the flagged adverts and stated that both models had medical certificates confirming they were healthy at the time the photos were taken.
The banned ads had appeared on Zara’s app and website as part of a carousel showcasing clothing on and off models.
One ad featured a short dress, where the ASA noted shadows made the model’s legs appear "noticeably thin," and the positioning of her arms and elbows gave an "out of proportion" look.
The other ad focused on a shirt, with the model’s pose making her "protruding" collarbones a "focal feature."
Two other Zara adverts were reviewed by the ASA but were not banned.
Although no direct complaints were received, Zara decided to remove all the images flagged by the regulator.
